ReviewAdrian's perspective of the Covid-19 lockdown, and how it's effected him as a freelance illustrator.
Like many creatives in the UK, especially freelancers. Work dried up quickly, without any notice, unless you were one of the people who predicted Covid-19 epidemic. And if you did, why the hell didn’t you tell me about it!
My last commission was at the end of February, and at the time, a week or two without a commission isn’t anything to lose sleep over. But as the Media covered more alarming news by the day... customers were putting projects on hold.
Okay, I thought.... I’ll work on my new website and have a think about new techniques and my marketing plans. But then the schools closed, and having two primary school boys to home school and catching Covid-19 virus, which knocked me out of action for weeks. The next few months have been a challenge to simple cope with that, let alone my business which was in a Covid Coma.
This period has given many the opportunity to reflect and act on their findings... not for me. But I can still take from it, I’ve learnt to be adaptable, and that my business will not evaporate if I take my eye off it. Trust me.
All of a sudden... Change again, and now work has started to trickle in. Only I’ve noticed it’s not the commissions that were put on hold in March, but commissions from existing customers... nothing from new business... perhaps my marketing really does need some TLC. But good to see an upturn from zero.
I celebrate 30 years in business as a freelance illustrator next month, and September is a month full of possibilities. What a turn-around !
I can’t see the future, but will post when I have something interesting to say. So please follow me, and I hope that all you creatives find a similar surge.
